Have you ever thought about your future impact on society as an engineer, scientist or in any other role? How about the responsibilities you might carry going forward? The "Dilemma of the Month" is a series of monthly, informal gatherings, which are designed to be an open space for you to explore, share and discuss your opinions and thoughts on a given topic with others. Everyone including non-CS and non-students is welcome to join :)

This month’s edition will focus on proposed age verification regulations and social media restrictions. Minimum age restrictions (or bans) for social media, AI services, and video games are gaining popularity globally. While the legislation is motivated by protection of children from harmful content, the use of age assurance mechanisms often requires collecting sensitive information that may lead to new risks for privacy, security, and equal access. How will digital platforms comply with evolving EU rules without enabling surveillance or excluding people who lack suitable identification? This topic surfaces challenges related to child safety, data protection, digital identity, and platform accountability. What responsibilities should regulators, technology companies, parents, and users have in determining how age assurance works online? 

Here's a sneak peek into possible questions¹ you can tinker with:

  • Should online platforms, governments, or parents be primarily responsible for determining which online content minors can access?
  • Is it fair to require official identification, or an EU digital identity, to access online services?
  • Are technical means of performing age assurance effective, and when do they become a form of surveillance?
