Dilemma of the Month
Event start time 21.4.2026 12:15
Event end time 21.4.2026 13:00
Have you ever thought about your future impact on society as an engineer, scientist or in any other role? How about the responsibilities you might carry going forward? The "Dilemma of the Month" is a series of monthly, informal gatherings, which are designed to be an open space for you to explore, share and discuss your opinions and thoughts on a given topic with others. Everyone including non-CS and non-students is welcome to join :)
This month's edition will be on Right to Repair. The ability to repair a device can extend its useful lifetime. It can save money for the end-user and avoids unnecessary waste. But complicated devices require complicated repairs. Should a company trust or expect the average person to repair their phone? Why not buy a new one? Topics of IP protection, good design, and sustainability all blend together. What roles and responsibilities do businesses, product designers, and consumers have in defining how repairable a device should be? Join the discussion and leave with new perspectives, and free lunch!
Here's a sneak peek into possible questions¹ you can tinker with:
- Is it reasonable for businesses to limits repairs to protect their intellectual property?
- What is a better product: one that is easily repairable or one that never needs to be repaired?
- Do you really own a product if you can't legally or practically fix it yourself?
📅 When: Tuesday, 21.04.2026, 12:15-13:00²
