JavaScript 2020: Time to leave the hype behind

or: Why you should not adopt yet another framework

Since jQuery was introduced in 2005, the trend in JavaScript has been towards more abstraction and more complex applications. MVC-based frameworks like Backbone.js and Angular.js have enabled separation of concerns on the frontend by favoring a straightforward software design. In most recent years, React and Vue became very successful by supporting huge engineering teams to develop a project together. They even reinvented themselves with Hooks and Composition API supporting the reuse of domain logic across components.

The introduction of a new framework always comes with a cost. The cost of training, framework limitations, and maintenance make it a risky affair to follow the latest hype. Besides, tools like Webpack or Babel turn code into unreadable compiled bundles, which can make debugging a nightmare. If you have ever read through the first few lines of a build, you might feel very confused about all the moving parts.

It’s 2020! ECMAScript modules, Custom Elements, fetch arrived in all major browsers. Do we still need the above frameworks? What’s possible in today’s web development?

We will find out by developing a small web application while learning about the most exciting new standards. No framework knowledge required!
