Have you ever thought about your future impact on society as an engineer, scientist or in any other role? How about the responsibilities you might carry in the future? The "Dilemma of the Month" is a series of monthly, informal gatherings, which are designed to be an open space for you to explore, share and discuss your opinions and thoughts on a given topic with others. Everyone including non-CS and non-students are welcome to join :)
This month's edition will be on "To what extent are you responsible for the technology you develop?" Here's a sneak peak into possible questions you can tinker with:
- Who do you believe holds more responsibility for the impact of technology - the developer or the user? If you find this situation-dependent, what criteria do you use to determine whether the user or developer is more responsible than the other?
- Where do you see your personal responsibility beginning and where ending, and what does it mean for you to be responsible? If you are still in your studies and if it is difficult for you to think about your potential future roles, what about responsibilities you might already have now as a student?
- The Hippocratic Oath and its modern variants serve as a pledge for physicians to follow good medical practices such as "do no harm", professional conduct and ethical standards, and reminds doctors of their responsibility towards their patients. What do you think about having such an oath for engineers?
